At the Season Opening
1998-1999
From
Chicago Symphony
Flaunting
By shoulders
Of tail-coat
The first violin
Grandly carries his figure out
To the orchestra
And significantly
Makes his bows
To the audience.
In spite of the cocky
Mobility of the shoulders
His hips
Are bound
And set
In a hemorrhoidal pose.
But movement begins. Oboe
Gently wedged in the tissue
Of musical narration.
Modestly and tenderly
The melody is rising,
Penetrating ray,
Deep into the sound texture.
Concert for oboe.
Alex Klein plays R.Strauss.
Later - jazz.
On piano for two
Willy and Bethany Pickens.
What power,
What strength it is!
Musicians' faces radiate
Light, joy,
Fed and softened
By applause.
At night,
Sleepy audience
Gathers and holds
Passion.
Free musical feast,
Day and night,
Lasting almost 25 hours,
No break,
At five concert stages
Simultaneously.
